A webinar was held on 9 August 2021 for NIC Associates, with employees from companies including Baker Hughes, Borouge, Chevron, Evonik, ExxonMobil, Maxtube, NOV, PDO, SABIC, Saudi Aramco, Shawcor and TWI, all in attendance.
The hour-long event included a talk from TWI Technology Fellow Alan Taylor on the topic of, ‘Silicon, silicone, silica, silane, polysiloxane, polysilazane .... Advanced additives and coating materials for the Oil and Gas sector.’
The presentation revealed how silicon-based coatings are evolving into new, high performance products capable of extending and expanding the use of metals and non-metallics alike.
Alan gave an overview of the different types of product within the broad family of silicon-based materials, where they are used and the attributes they provide. He also highlighted emerging products and how these materials help overcome barriers being faced by engineers, including additives to improve the durability of polymer coatings, thin high temperature barrier coatings, permanent mould release coatings and additives to enhance the properties of thermoplastics.
The presentation was followed by a Q&A session where the attendees were able to ask questions. This well-attended webinar is the first in a programme of events aimed at NIC Associates and you can find out more about the NIC Associate programme here.
