Hydrogen in Oil and Gas Industry Webinar Now Online

Wed, 09 February, 2022

The Non-Metallic Innovation Centre (NIC) welcomed around 600 attendees for a webinar dedicated to ‘Hydrogen in the Oil and Gas industry.’

This popular event drew nearly 900 registrants as TWI senior project leader and member of the NIC’s expert technical staff, George V. Theodosopoulos MSc, PhD presented on how the oil and gas industry is contributing to the adoption of hydrogen as an alternative energy source.

As governments and industries across the globe are moving towards greener practises and the utilisation of renewable resources, hydrogen has emerged as a very promising fuel alternative due to properties such as its energy and volumetric density.

However, there are still barriers associated with the transportation, storage and distribution of pure hydrogen, with notable solutions including the transformation of hydrogen (H2) to ammonia (NH4), the use of other liquid organic hydrogen carriers, or as compressed liquefied H2.

Despite this potential solutions, the most significant barrier to the widespread adoption of hydrogen as a primary energy resource remains the establishment of a widely accepted infrastructure system that allows for the storage and the distribution of this clean energy source, in a sustainable and economically viable way.

In addition, long-term studies on the effect of the identified carriers on material(s) comprising the infrastructure and systems used in the transportation, storage and distribution have yet to be presented, thus limiting the presentation of an accurate lifecycle cost assessment (LCCA) of the proposed supply method.

George’s webinar presentation investigated many of these issues as part of the work of the NIC to reduce the carbon footprint, overall production costs and the environmental impact of energy supply through the implementation of non-metallic solutions and development of expertise, including addressing the gaps and barriers of hydrogen utilisation and aiding the transition toward and carbon neutral energy supply.
