Non-Metallic Innovation Centre student, Maciej Gierulski, who is studying with the University of Sheffield, has been recognised by the National Structural Integrity Research Centre (NSIRC) for his second academic year oral presentation.
Maciej’s work investigated Electrofusion (EF) couplers for thermoplastic composite pipe, as his conference abstract detailed:
"Recently, thermoplastic composite pipes (TCPs) have been developed that have pressure capacities comparable to that of the metallic solutions, but they still are connected with steel joints. The aim of this project is to design a thermoplastic connector for polyethylene (PE) TCPs that utilises EF welding technology."
Maciej was one of 35 industry-focused PhD students to make an oral presentation detailing their ongoing research at the 2021 NSIRC Research and Innovation Conference, and one of four prize winners selected from among the second and third year students. In addition, two first year PhD students were recognised for their research poster presentations.
The oral presentations were delivered to over 300 industry technology experts, academics and research peers, summarising their research topics and reviewing initial findings, current research, and future plans for further investigation ahead of a question and answer session.
Each oral presentation lasted 15 to 20 minutes as part of a packed two day schedule, that also included presentations from PhD supervisors on the TWI Core Research Programme.
